Let's get on the Potty Train!!

Last week when I asked Carter if he wanted to potty train soon he said train.... choo choo! We ordered a book to teach us, the parents, what exactly we needed to do to finally get this started. It suggested getting a book for Carter and a video that encourage him to potty like a big boy. So, that is just what we did. Carter watched that video at least 7 times the first couple days. He really liked the video and when it ended he excitedly asked to see it again. It did encourage him to try and it taught him that diapers are for babies and underwear are for big boys. He went around the house saying bye bye diapers, trash. Just like the song in the video taught him. So, with instructions to cut the diapers out of our lives cold turkey we put underwear and running pants on Carter. The running pants worked great for absorption. The first time he had an accident he started to scream and cry. He did not understand why he felt warm wet throughout his bottom half of his body. He had yet to potty in the potty. The main reason being, he did not know he needed to hold it, he did not know it was ok to relieve himself while sitting on the potty. That morning we had a few more accidents. I put him in the bath and within a couple minutes he stood and proclaimed POTTY!. I was skeptical that he actually needed to go but I put him on the potty anyway and he did it. I could not have been more proud. We are on day 5 and he is doing pretty good. He is still having accidents and is very reluctant to tell us when he has to go but we watch for the signs which consist of him holding himself and running in circles with a very worried look on his face. When asked if he needs to pee he continues to run in circles saying NOOOO. I know better though and I quickly get him on the potty. Usually these warning signs provide enough time to get him on the potty in just enough time. Night time and Nap time is usually not a problem because he has been waking up dry since he was 1, maybe even younger. He can easily go 12+ hours at night staying dry. Sometimes he is in his big boy undies and sometimes a diaper. Even in a diaper we are getting the same warning signs so when he seems to be feeling too safe in the diaper then we switch back over to the undies so he can see he does need to hold it til he can sit on the potty. This training seems to be working well for him... Of course the incentive of a new hot wheels car everytime he correctly uses the potty doesn't hurt. I hope that by the end of the month we can be rid of the diapers except for nap times. One thing is for sure, potty training is proving to be quite amusing.
